Operation ID

Operation ID
Operation ID is a program to discourage theft and burglary by identification of your valuables. One of the most effective tools you can use to help prevent burglary is a simple engraving pen with which you can inscribe your driver's license number on your valuable property in and around your home. With this identification you make your property more readily identifiable to the police and you help deter crime in two ways. First, a thief is discouraged from stealing marked property because it is much more difficult for him to sell. Second, it is much easier to apprehend and prosecute the thief and the chances of recovery are increased greatly.

We recommend you engrave your driver's license number on your property, since identifying information can be obtained in just a few minutes by law enforcement personnel via computer. If you do not have a driver's license, you can obtain an ID number through the Texas Department of Public Safety.

When marking your property, the following procedures are suggested:

  • Use an engraving pen to inscribe your driver's license number on the upper right hand corner of the rear or backside of un-serialized items. Use the letters TX for the state, followed by the drivers license numbers. Example: TX12345678
  • Property which has a manufacturer's serial number should also be marked. Inscribe your license number just above the serial number.
  • Take photos of small valuable items, such as jewelry, and keep the pictures along with your record of other marked items, in a safe place.
  • Keep your record in a safe place for easy reference in case of loss or theft.
