Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Crime Lab Receives National Accreditation

Media Partners: You are cordially invited too:

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Crime Laboratory’s Firearm and Tool Mark section is receiving initial accreditation by ANAB (ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board –a national board who works to ensure the safety and quality of goods and services are provided through the adherence of international standards and competent work products) under ISO/IEC 17020:2012 standards (International Organization of Standardization - an independent, non-governmental international organization which establishes standards to ensure quality, safety and efficiency for products, services and systems). This accreditation required countless man hours over the last fifteen months by Crime Laboratory personnel. In 2003, Texas was the first state to require specific forensic disciplines within crime laboratories to be accredited; one of which, is the Firearms and Tool Marks section. The Firearm and Tool Mark section is responsible for analyzing firearms evidence collected from crime scenes, such as cartridge cases and bullets, to determine if they were or were not fired from a particular gun. If no gun was submitted with the firearms evidence, the Firearms Examiner is tasked to determine how many guns were involved and possibly what type(s). Additionally, the Firearms and Tool Mark section restores altered/obliterated serial numbers on guns and enters evidence into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) database to determine if the evidence is connected to any other firearms related crime within the designated search areas. Accreditation from ANAB, an independent third party, informs our customers that the services provided by the lab and/or section demonstrates compliance to established international standards; resulting in a quality work product by competent personnel. The Firearms and Tool Mark section is an integral first step in the Crime Laboratory’s accreditation process.
