Applicant Testing

Certified Law Enforcement Positions In order to apply for the certified law enforcement positions (Deputy, Reserve Deputy) the applicant must be a Texas Certified Peace Officer prior to application.  In addition to being certified by TCLEOSE as a Texas Peace Officer, applicants applying for the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office certified positions are required to pass the Montgomery County Physical Agility Course, pass the Police Officer Selection Test (POST IV) and pass the Montgomery County Firearms Qualification Course in order to advance to the background investigation stage of the application process.
 
Physical Agility Course

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office has designed the Physical Agility Course to be as job related as possible.  This course was designed to measure the basic physical skills necessary for successful performance as an entry level law enforcement officer.  This is a pass/fail test.  Successful passing is required to advance to the National Police Officer Selection Test (POST IV).  Applicants needing additional information regarding the course should contact the Recruiting Division.
 
National Police Officer Selection Course

The National Police Officer Selection Test (POST IV) designed by Stanard & Associates, Inc. is administered to measure three (3) primary cognitive skills (reading, writing, and mathematics) which are critical to successfully learning and performing the law enforcement officer job.  The test is specifically divided into sections measuring Mathematics, Reading Comprehension, Grammar and Incident Report Writing.  This is a pass/fail test.  Successful passing is required to advance to the Montgomery County Firearms Qualification Course.
 
MCSO Firearms Qualification Course

The Montgomery County Firearms Qualification Course is administered by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Academy personnel.  This course is designed to measure the applicant's competency in the use of firearms.  The applicant must pass with a minimum score of 80% in order to be given an application for employment for the law enforcement position he or she is seeking.  Successful passing of all three (3) tests is necessary for the applicant to be given an employment application for review by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. The background stage of the application should follow. Detention Officer Positions Individuals testing for the Detention Officer position are required to pass the Montgomery County Physical Agility Course and pass the Police Officer Selection Test (POST IV) in order to be given an employment application for the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department and advance to the background investigation stage of the application process.

Physical Agility Course

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Department has designed the physical agility test to be as job related as possible.  This course was designed to measure the basic physical skills necessary for successful performance as an entry level law enforcement officer. This is a pass/fail test.  Successful passing is required to advance to the National Police Officer Selection Test (POST IV).

National Police Officer Selection Course

The National Police Officer Selection Test (POST IV) designed by Stanard & Associates, Inc. is administered to measure three (3) primary cognitive skills (reading, writing and mathematics) which are critical to successfully learning and performing the law enforcement officer job.  The test is specifically divided into sections measuring Mathematics, Reading Comprehension, Grammar and Incident Report Writing.  This is a pass/fail test.  Successful passing is required to advance to the Montgomery County Firearms Qualification Course.  Applicants who successfully pass both tests may be given an employment application for the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department at this stage of the application process. Telecommunicator Applicants will be required to successfully pass a typing test, clerical skills test and the Criticall Exam for Communications Operators. The applicant must pass all tests in order to be given a Montgomery County Sheriff's Department application for employment.  The applicant must score a minimum 25 WPM on the typing test. Score in the medium or high average on the written test, pass the Criticall test with a minimum score of 63 with keystrokes 2958, and pass a hearing & drug test. Clerical Positions The Montgomery County Sheriff's Department requires a typing test and clerical skills test for all clerical positions. Clerical positions include Warrant/Records Clerks and the Secretary positions. The applicant must pass both tests in order to be given a Montgomery County Sheriff's Department application for employment.
 
Typing Test

The Texas Workforce Commission will administer the typing test. This test measures the applicant's net typing speed. The applicant must successfully type a minimum of 50 WPM for all clerical positions except the Jail Records Specialist position. The applicant must successfully pass the test to advance to the written test.
 
Written Test

The Montgomery County Human Resource Office will administer the written test. This test measures the applicant's accuracy in spelling. The applicant must successfully pass the test with a minimum score in at least the medium average range. The applicant must pass the written test as well as the typing test in order to be given a Montgomery County Sheriff's Department application for employment.
